On a typical Sunday morning in Tampa’s Old Hyde Park Village, women from all over the area are browsing through shops, eating, or enjoying a walk with their dog. On January 27, over 200 women gathered in Hyde Park, not to stroll or shop, but to attend Women’s Day 2008, an event hosted by the Tampa Bay Church encouraging women to seek out a deeper relationship with God.
Inside the Kate Jackson Center round tables were beautifully decorated with an assortment of china, flowers, and serving platters filled with pastries and fruit. Each table was unique and different, reflecting the diverse group of women who filled the room. Women’s Day was an incredible time for women to share their lives and be real and vulnerable with one another. Some women shared songs, others shared their life and how they became Christians. As our special guest speaker, Robin Weidner, author of Secure in Heart, shared her life and God’s word with us, I began to realize how guarded I had kept my heart. Instead of being open and vulnerable with those around me, I’d become scared and protective, not wanting to share all my thoughts and feelings with others in fear that I would get hurt. Every woman who gathered that Sunday morning took a certain idea away with them significant to their life. Some have shared how refreshing it was to hear Robin and other women speak so genuinely about their life experiences, others have shared their appreciation for the way Robin so clearly explained God’s word. |

Young and old, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, college students, teenagers, married women and singles, some from Tampa, others from South Florida and Orlando, we were all together learning how we are really much more similar than it may seem.
I began to realize that I had stopped gaining my security from God and had become very dependent on myself.
